Smart Money Moves
1. Top Up Your Savings
How’s your rainy day fund? As a ballpark figure, you need the equivalent of at least three months’ living expenses in a savings account, one that is easy to access as an ‘emergency fund’, to cover the financial surprises life throws our way. Some of the unforeseen surprises we face are job loss, medical or dental emergency, unexpected home repairs, car troubles and unplanned travel expenses.
2. Check Your Life cover
If you have dependents that rely on your income, life cover is one way of protecting them financially. There are other important benefits you can add to your life insurance policy such as trauma insurance and income protection insurance to make sure that you and your loved ones are provided for should the unexpected happen.
3. Update Your Will
Once you’ve written a will it’s easy to tick it off the list and forget about it. But you should review it every five years and certainly after any major changes in your life. For small changes you can add a codicil, but for major changes you will need to make a new will.
4. Pay Off What You Owe
Nobody likes the idea of owing money, much less paying interest on it. But borrowing is a fact of daily life – whether it’s topping up a home loan for renovations, credit cards, overdrafts or hire purchase, etc., reducing or eliminating interest on any debt should be a priority. Work out a realistic budget and include the highest repayments you can afford.

Not to be sneezed at!
If you’re someone who shies away from the sniffling person who sits next to you, you’re right to be paranoid. According to a paper published in the (brilliantly named) Journal of Fluid Medicine, a sneeze can travel up to 200 times further than previously thought, and the ‘droplets’ from the sneeze hang in the air far longer.
The study also found that if the sneeze cloud is near a ventilation or air-conditioning system, this can transfer germs further. The best way to sneeze is into the crook of your elbow, which apparently “breaks up the coherence of the cloud, dividing the number of droplets and reducing their range.”
Hopefully the cold and flu season is now behind us with the arrival of Spring!
August Market Update & 2017 Election
- August was a relatively quiet month for share markets, but with currency movements boosting fund returns. The New Zealand dollar fell 5% against the major currencies and this helped the performance for New Zealand investors with investments off shore, reinforcing the importance of global diversification.
- Emerging markets (e.g. China, Brazil and Russia) were the standout share markets during August. The fortunes of these markets are typically tied to the performance of commodities as they are some of the largest producers and consumers of a number of different commodities.
- The 2017 New Zealand general election will take place on Saturday, 23 September to determine the membership of the 52nd New Zealand Parliament. The National Party has governed since 2008 and will be seeking a fourth term in government against the opposition parties Labour (the official opposition), Green and New Zealand First. It will be the first election for Bill English as incumbent Prime Minister, having replaced John Key on December 2016.
